At least 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
