The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
