The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Rock Generations

It has been 20 years after the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the means to become a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing someone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match coloured notes moving along the display synchronized to a song. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine performance.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable series that had a significant impact for many musicians included, introducing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges in securing the songs – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the songs they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band the Answer had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, but then once it got included in the title young people discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated it, eliminating the outdated label. It gave our catalog a new life.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained unreleased stateside, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s biggest acts quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others starring in dedicated game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and related lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the group greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, while demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% at a time when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed an impressive attempt featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by the game – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with similar mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is difficult enough on expert mode, let alone performed at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band previously completed a successful tour when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Recently, the track was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to a single track, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got a unique path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators believed humans have a natural urge to make music, and their goal was to use technology to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority installments came out in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. After that, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Games like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the community alive, and there’s expectations of something from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on their first music game. Original co-founders are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual update every year,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t persist with new generations.”
